Multi-function Devices (MFDs) are suitable for scanning in most departments and in most cases. We recommend departments consider using their MFDs for scanning first before investing in a new scanner. The KU IT Application Analyst can provide information on how MFDs are being used with the scanning service.
If there is concern the MFD is not fast enough, or you have a significant quantity of ongoing scanning activity and don't want to prevent others from using the MFD for copying, a high speed Automatic Document Feed (ADF) scanner can be purchased. ADF scanners require a dedicated workstation running software that the department must purchase and maintain. KU Information Technology prefers standardization of ADF scanners on campus and recommends specific models.

ADF scanners require a dedicated workstation running software that the department must purchase and maintain. If you are considering the purchase of an ADF scanner to use with the scanning service, contact us at email@example.com for assistance in getting a quote for the software license and annual software maintenance.
You must contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org of your intent to use a scanner. For MFD usage, we will need to set up a location on a share drive for scanned documents to be stored and an ImageNow Import Agent to bring the documents into ImageNow. For an ADF scanner, we will need to set up an ImageNow Capture Profile to bring the documents into ImageNow and we will also need to install the software license you purchase from Perceptive. For both types of scanning, we will need to set up ImageNow Drawers, Document Types, Application Plans, and any workflow process that you need for the scanned documents.
